Be Active Camps
The inaugural "Be Active Winter Sports Accrediation Camp" was held at
Woodman Point Recreation Camp grounds from April 18th to 22nd 2005. The
camp
consisted of 53 Year 9/10 students selected from 22 shires from the
four Be
Active regions in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia.
The camp was made possible thanks to funding received from the
Department of
Sport and Recreation and Lotterywest. The aim of the camp was to teach
students leadership, coaching and safety skills in their chosen sports
in
order to bring those skills back to their communities to assist with
coaching and or umpiring at a local level. The students were given the
choice of completing a Level 1 coaching accreditation in football,
hockey or
netball and all received certificates of completion in courses
including
First Aid, Sports Strapping and injury prevention.
The campers were also fortunate enough to meet several Fremantle
Dockers
players at a training session and were involved in a clinic organised
by the
Fremantle Dockers staff. Many received autographs and photos and were
published on the Freo web site that week.
The students received another treat when the entire group had desert at
the
Mint Leaf Restaurant, which stars in the TV show My Restaurant Rules on
Channel 7. The students met Andre and Sandy who ran the restaurant and
some
were fortunate enough to receive autographs. Thursday afternoon saw
lots of
fun with a visit to Adventure World.
With four different coloured uniforms, students wore their designated
colour
during public appearances and sporting competitions. These competitions
were
survivor style competitions and were used to win a sleep in.
All the students enjoyed the week, many made new friends and learned
much
about coaching and safety in sport.
A camp for summer sports will be held in the October 2005 school
holidays
and information will be provided to students in the coming months. |
